Wedding Ceremony Do’s and Don’ts – Essential Advice for Brides & Grooms

Your wedding ceremony is the heart of your big day — the moment when you officially begin your forever together. While the lead-up to the ceremony is often a whirlwind of excitement and nerves, a little preparation can help things run smoothly and ensure that you’re fully present to soak up every moment.

Having captured countless weddings, we’ve seen what works beautifully — and what can lead to stress and distractions. So here’s our list of do’s and don’ts to help you prepare for a flawless and meaningful ceremony.

DO’S

1. Have a Rehearsal at home in your living room (and Take It Seriously!)

Even if you think you know what you’re doing, a rehearsal helps everyone feel more comfortable and confident on the day.

✔️ Walk through the order of events.

✔️ Practice where to stand and how to hold hands.

✔️ Make sure everyone involved (bridal party, and family) knows their role and timing.

The more prepared everyone feels, the smoother the ceremony will be.

2. Appoint a Point Person

Designate someone you trust (a wedding planner, bridesmaid, or groomsman) to handle any last-minute questions or issues. This way, you’re not being pulled in different directions before walking down the aisle.

3. Plan Where to Stand

Your photographer will thank you for this! Talk to us and work out where you and your partner will stand so that:

✔️ You’re not blocking each other’s faces.

✔️ You’re positioned in good light (especially for outdoor ceremonies).

✔️You’re centered within the backdrop for the best photos.

4. Hold the Bouquet Correctly

For brides: hold your bouquet at your belly button — not up near your chest. This creates a more relaxed posture and ensures your dress and face are visible in photos. There is a saying that you wont ever forget – PUBES NOT BOOBS. This goes for the bridesmaids as well.

5. Make Eye Contact with Each Other

It’s easy to get nervous and start looking down or focusing on the officiant. But remember — this is about you two.

✔️ Look at each other.

✔️ Smile.

✔️ Hold hands.

This makes the ceremony feel more intimate and creates more authentic photos.

6. Speak Slowly and Clearly

When you’re emotional, it’s easy to rush through your vows. Take a deep breath and speak slowly — it gives your words more meaning and ensures everyone (including the photographer) can capture the moment.

7. Pause for a Moment After the First Kiss

That first kiss as a married couple is one of the most iconic moments of the day.

✔️ Hold the kiss for a second longer than you think you should.

✔️ After the kiss, pause, smile, and soak up the applause.

This gives your photographer time to capture that perfect shot!

8. Have a Clear Exit Plan

After the ceremony, you’ll want to avoid confusion about where to go next.

✔️ Plan your exit route with your planner and photographer

✔️ Decide if you want a confetti toss, a bubble send-off, or a quiet walk back down the aisle.

✔️ Make sure your photographers know so they can position themselves for the best shot.

🚫 DON’TS

1. Don’t Rush Down the Aisle

Take your time! Bridesmaids, groomsmen, and the couple should walk slowly down the aisle. Rushing creates awkward photos and makes the ceremony feel less meaningful.

2. Don’t Lock Your Knees

Standing for long periods can cause you to feel lightheaded or even faint — especially in the heat. Keep your knees slightly relaxed and shift your weight gently from side to side if you start to feel uncomfortable.

3. Don’t Forget to Smile

It sounds obvious, but nerves can make you tense and forget to smile. A serious expression might seem natural in the moment, but you’ll want to see those happy, glowing smiles in your photos.

4. Don’t Rush the Ring Exchange

Take your time sliding the ring on your partner’s finger. A rushed exchange can look awkward in photos — and might even cause a moment of panic if the ring doesn’t slide on easily.

5. Don’t Get Distracted by the Guests

It’s easy to look around at your guests to see who’s smiling or who’s crying — but remember, this moment is about you and your partner. Focus on each other. The guests will feel included naturally.

6. Don’t Skip the Post-Ceremony Hug

Once the ceremony ends, take a moment to hug each other and really soak in the moment. These candid, emotional shots often end up being some of the most cherished.

8. Don’t drink too much

✔️ Pace Yourself with the Drinks – It’s tempting to celebrate with a few extra drinks, but too much alcohol can leave you feeling off-balance and tired — not to mention affecting how you look and feel in photos. Enjoy a few drinks, but remember to stay hydrated and keep a clear head so you can fully soak in every moment.

🌟 Extra Tips for the Groom

•Make sure your suit is steamed and fits perfectly — nothing looks worse than an ill-fitting jacket!

•Carry a handkerchief or tissue in your pocket (you’ll thank yourself if the emotions hit hard).

•Check your shoes — give them a quick polish and make sure they’re comfortable.

•Keep your boutonniere in place — ask the florist to secure it with extra pins if necessary.

•Make sure your pockets are empty, nothing worse than a big bulge caused by a wallet or phone.

•Don’t forget to smile or cry when you see your bride walking down the aisle — that’s a moment she’ll never forget!

🌸 Extra Tips for the Bride

•Do a final check in the mirror before heading down the aisle — lipstick, veil, and hair in place!

•Take slow, deep breaths to calm your nerves before walking down the aisle.

•If you’re wearing heels, practice walking in them beforehand!

•Depending on your venue, consider wearing a long veil for dramatic entrance shots — they always look stunning in photos. Talk to your photographer or planner for advice.

•If you make a mistake in your vows — don’t panic! Just laugh it off and keep going — it makes for a sweet, human moment.
